I am thrilled to be part of the Ascent Academies team and to play a role in bringing another choice in education to families in Utah. I am firm believer that there is plenty of room in education for all kinds of schools – district, private, parochial, homeschool, and of course charter. I believe that choices in education bring benefits to students, teachers, and families.

I have been involved with charters schools for the past 11 years, after returning to Utah from England, where I was teaching in the British school system while my wife completed her graduate degree. Ascent Academies is the third charter school I have helped to open and I find a lot of energy, excitement, and satisfaction in being involved with a “start-up” project. Prior to “discovering” charter schools, I worked in both private and district schools, teaching a wide range of age groups and classes ranging from A.P. classes to teaching 1st graders. I have also instructed at the university level as an adjunct professor.

I know that children learn best when they are engaged and are enjoying themselves. Ascent Academies' commitment to the SEM approach, as well as our commitment to attracting and retaining master teachers, ensures that students stay engaged in learning and thereby experience academic success as well as establish a firm love of learning.

I graduated from BYU with a B.A. Degree in Secondary Education and a M.A. Degree in Teaching & Learning. I successfully completed the Educational Leadership: Administration & Supervision Praxis Exam, used nationwide as a standard for school administration licensure. In my free time, I enjoy long walks with my wife and two teenage children, as well as hiking, camping, traveling, listening to NPR, cooking, going to the movies, and laughing. I love to laugh every single day!

Hi! I'm Dave. My story is rather dull and boring, very unlike the food that I like to create. I am from the great state of Maine, where I grew up and lived in a small town of 1500 people. It was hidden in the middle of nowhere. If one were to put their finger on Bangor on a map, at the top of your finger you would see my hometown. My high school had 9 towns that sent to it. My graduating class had 80 students. After High School everyone decided that I should go into Culinary. My folks owned a little diner for a while so it seemed fitting. I earned my Culinary Arts degree with some hard work and some state and national competitions I was on my way... no far... Maine didn't offer a lot for me. I decided to add some adventure to my life, that took me to Los Angeles CA. I lived in several areas and taught some cooking classes and had some fun.
I returned to Maine where I worked for a year before making the choice again that Maine wasn't offering me what I needed. I took a leap of faith and applied to go back to school. I was accepted to a college in the west and packed my car up the day after Christmas in 2005. I drove across this great country and started school.
I had to work to get my education so I worked in the Culinary field. After managing several different locations I thought I was happy....
Then the day after I finished school, I went out to dinner with some friends and my folks. There was this nice waitress. She was working hard to earn a good tip... I left my number (first time ever), she texted me three days later. Our first date was Jan 3rd 2009. We talked marriage three weeks later and I popped the question March 1st 2009.
We married and moved to Maine. Well in Maine I thought that I would get out of the food world. It lasted 6 weeks and I missed it. Again I was in a kitchen working, after 1 daughter (Abagail) was born and 21 months we decided to head west again.
A few more gigs managing restaurants and I found my way into working in school foods. Daughter 2 (Chloe) and 3 (Emma) were since born
I am excited about being a part of Ascent. I want to share my passion of food by creating foods that are better then normal school lunch and share the knowledge that I have gained in my years. I look forward to getting to know you.  Stop by and visit us in the kitchens.

I have lived my entire life in the Salt Lake Valley, attending Utah State University and Salt Lake Community College. Much of my experience before working in a charter school was acquired at the City of South Jordan as the City Administrator's secretary and City Recorder. However, this will be my 9th year as an Office Manager for a local charter school.

My husband and I have three children, who have attended local charter schools for several years. Our youngest is in junior high at AAUWJ. I have volunteered for many years at my children’s schools, PTAs, and various community groups. I also organized the very first scrapbooking categories of competition for the Salt Lake County and Utah State fairs.

When not at school, you will find me spending time with and supporting my family, making greeting cards, rubber stamping, and watching reality TV. I am thrilled to be working at Ascent Academies being able to say I was here for "Year One" and beyond!

I attended Southern Utah University where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Secondary English Education. I continued my education at Utah State University where I earned by School Library Media Endorsement. Over ten years in education has allowed me to work with students from kindergarten to high school, and now I get to work with students and staff as their librarian.

I grew up in rural Utah, married my high school sweetheart, and we have one son. I really enjoy reading and collecting books. I also like cookies, organizing, and LEGO.

I enjoy what I do and hope to spark the love of reading and learning in our students.
