I am so excited to join the Ascent Academy Team. I determined to become a Special Education teacher because of personal relationships with others who were struggling as young adults. I determined that was where I wanted to develop myself and help others. After graduating from California State University, Northridge, I began teaching in the public school system where I gained valuable experience for 8 years. I strongly believe that all students can learn to make good decisions, which in turn helps them succeed academically.

I am beyond thrilled to be working at Ascent Academy! I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Disorders from Brigham Young University in 2013. I recently acquired my teaching license in both Elementary Education and Special Education. I found my passion for teaching and working with children 5 years ago when I began working at a school for children with autism. While working there I was able to gain experience as a paraeducator, speech-language technician, and special education teacher.  Working with children with autism taught me that we all learn in different ways, we are all capable of great things, and learning should be and can be a lot of fun. I believe that teaching is about instilling in students a desire to learn and to follow their passions. As a teacher, I want each one of my students to know how special, capable, and brilliant they are.

I grew up in Fort Collins, Colorado and moved to Utah to attend BYU. I met my wonderful husband after graduating and we were married in August 2014. My husband and I love to spend time outside hiking, camping, biking, and taking pictures. In my free time I also enjoy reading, cooking, watching movies, running, and playing tennis.

Speech Language Pathologist

I love working with the students and parents at Ascent Academies. As an SLP, I have worked in many different settings: hospitals, rehabilitation centers, treatment centers, nursing facilities, home health agencies, early intervention programs, preschool programs, elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. I have also worked in public, private, and charter school settings. I graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Communicative Disorders/Speech Language Pathology. I became a Speech Language Pathologist because I want to help students with difficulties improve their ability to successfully communicate with others. I love helping students realize their potential, make necessary changes to reach their potential and then succeeding beyond what they thought was possible.

My husband and I are the parents of 5 boys and a girl.  I thoroughly enjoy spending most of my free time with my family. I love traveling, the outdoors and outdoor activities including golf, boating and most sports.

I am excited for another great year at Ascent Academies-West Jordan.

I am excited to be a part of the Ascent Academy team. I love helping students find success and fun in learning. I have worked as a teaching assistant for four years. I have taught a math intervention program, worked with struggling readers and spent last school year as the assistant in the most delightful sixth grade classroom.

I am the proud wife of a retired West Jordan police officer, mother to 4 daughters and one son in law and “Nonni” to one adorable two year old granddaughter. I enjoy cooking, reading and sewing and love going to Disneyland with my family.

My name is Melissa Coon. I was born and raised in Utah. We have lived in West Jordan for the past 5 years and love it. I have been married to my best friend for 16 years . We have three daughters. Two of our daughters attend Ascent Academy. For the last 13 years I have had my dream job of staying at home with my kids. I am excited to become part of the Ascent family and enter this new phase of my life. I earned my bachelor's degree from Utah State University in Psychology with a minor in Family and Human Development.

I love to be with my family. We really enjoy spending time outdoors. I like to fish, hike, camp, and go boating. We try to go camping as a family often. One of our favorite spots is Flaming Gorge. My dad went there as a child. My parents took me there as a child and now my husband and I take our kids. One of my kids went to Flaming Gorge for her first trip when she was only 2 months old.

Other activities I enjoy are decorating, shopping, and doing projects with my husband. Our house is only 5 years old and I have loved trying to make it our home. I love to decorate and redecorate. I have a constant list of things that I want to change in the house and build with my husband. I am sure sometimes I overwhelm him with all my ideas, but he is patient with me. Sometimes there are frustrations along the way with a project, but in the end I love just spending time with him.
