I am excited to be a part of the West Jordan Campus as an Assistant Director! My role at Ascent combines multiple passions of mine: working with junior high students; helping educators find and trust their voice in the classroom, and facilitating a culture of collaboration and positivity. I was drawn to Ascent Academy not just for its fantastic SEM model, but also because of its stellar reputation in the state as a public charter school.
I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2008 with a B.S. in Psychology. Shortly after graduating I was hired as a Special Education Teacher in Salt Lake City, and I have been working with students in public and non-public schools in rural and urban settings ever since. After relocating to California, I worked with at-risk youth at non-public schools in San Francisco.
In 2012, I returned to Utah and began teaching in a traditional classroom setting. For several years I served as a teacher and program director for the theater department in Box Elder and Ogden School District.
In 2015, I returned to my original passion of working in special education. Last year I joined the Ascent Network Team as a Special Education Coordinator and loved visiting with the students and staff at the West Jordan Campus. I have experience with students in elementary, middle, and high school settings in various capacities: case manager, teacher, mentor, and mental health worker. I am thrilled to bring my experience and passion to the Junior High in order to help all students succeed.
I was raised by two educators in Logan, Utah and attended Edith Bowen Laboratory School, which could be described as the first public charter school in Utah. My wife and I live in Salt Lake City with our hyperactive border collie, Porter. In my free time, I love writing and recording music, attending concerts & films, hiking, traveling, maintaining my small orchard of fruit trees, and finding the best cup of coffee or sandwich in my current location.
